WASHINGTON—Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) and Vice-Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, met Sunday with leaders in Qatar at the Doha Forum and World Economic Forum Global Redesign Summit.
Co-Chairman Hastings met with Qatar’s Second Deputy Prime Minister Abdallah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, who handles energy issues for the Persian Gulf country and chairs Qatar Petroleum. The men discussed strategies for remediation of the BP oil spill, the outlook for the Middle East peace process, and emerging Qatari interests in the activities of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Co-Chairman Hastings serves as the Special Representative for Mediterranean Affairs for the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
“The strategic importance of U.S. bilateral relations with Qatar should not be neglected,” Co-Chairman Hastings said. “The Qataris have made an admirable, sustained effort of convening the great minds of the world to foster multilateral cooperation and global citizenship. I look forward to Qatar’s efforts to promote the Middle East peace process and broadly increase multilateral security cooperation.”
