Washington- Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) and Co-Chairman Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), will hold a hearing entitled, “Racism in the 21st Century: Understanding Global Challenges and Implementing Solutions” on Wednesday, July 16 at 11:00 a.m. in room B-318 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
The hearing will focus on the continuing challenge of addressing non-violent and violent forms of racial and ethnic discrimination in the 56 North American and European countries that make up the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) region, including racist and xenophobic political platforms, increases in hate crimes, and inequalities in housing, education, employment, and the justice system. Additionally, the hearing will examine lessons learned and the way forward in combating racism and xenophobia with the goal of determining what the international community can and should be doing to address the problem.
