WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, announced today that James Geoffrey has been named the new Director of Communications for the Commission.
“It’s great to have James on board,” said Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission. “We think he can bring some new energy and focus to the Commission’s communications efforts.”
Geoffrey assumed the communications post on April 21. Previously he served as Vice-President of Communications and Policy at the National Congress for Community and Economic Development (NCCED).
“One of the unique things about James was his background,” noted Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) Helsinki Commission Co-Chair, “He brings a tremendous wealth of diverse experience — on the Hill, off the Hill, legislative and press experience. His perspective will be helpful to our mission.”
Prior to working for NCCED, Geoffrey was a consultant to the National Business Coalition on E-Commerce and Privacy and to the Project on the Advocacy on U.S. Interests Abroad, where his role included press relations. From 1988 to 1994 Geoffrey served in the office of Rep. Bill McCollum (R-FL, ret.), where he rose to the position of Legislative Director. From 1995 to 1997, he then served as Legislative Director for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-FL, ret.). He was also Editor of the Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare from 1989 to 1995.
Geoffrey is a Michigan native who came to Washington in 1988. A graduate of the University of Detroit, he has a degree in Communications. Geoffrey wrote a weekly column for several Detroit area newspapers from 1986 to 1988.
