WASHINGTON– The United States Helsinki Commission, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State, will participate at the staff level in the 2001 Human Dimension Implementation Review of the 55-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to be held September 17 – 27 in Warsaw, Poland.
During this meeting, U.S. officials will deliver a series of statements regarding the current status of human rights in various participating States of the OSCE.
The review meeting will focus on human rights issues including the prevention of torture, minority rights, the rule of law, and freedom of the media among many others.
More than 150 non-governmental organizations (NGO) are expected to participate in the review process in addition to the participating States.
Participating States are accountable to their citizens and responsible to each other for their implementation of their OSCE commitments. The commitments are a common achievement and therefore considered to be matters of immediate and legitimate concern to all participating States.
