WASHINGTON – The United States Helsinki Commission will hold a briefing to examine the human cost to this unresolved conflict dating to 1992 and prospects for ultimate resolution.

Vice President Biden’s March visit to Moldova, coupled with renewed interest within the Congress and the European Union over the past year, has raised the prospect of a breakthrough in resolving the conflict in Moldova’s secessionist region, Transnistria. The Commission briefing will build upon this impetus toward movement on settlement of the Transnistria conflict by examining how the existing security and governance conditions in the region affect the human rights and humanitarian situations on the ground. The briefing will also explore prospects for a breakthrough in the near-term.
