WASHINGTON—Following the European Commission’s adoption of the 2023 Enlargement package, which included recommendations for the European Union to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, grant candidate status to Georgia, and conditionally extend negotiations to Bosnia and Herzegovina, CSCE Chairman Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02) and Co-Chairman Ben Cardin (MD) issued the following joint statement:
“We welcome last week’s recommendations by the European Commission, which would give Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina an important opportunity to deliver on their people’s aspirations to live in peaceful, prosperous, and democratic societies. This is a historic moment for Europe, and yet another clear repudiation of Russia’s aggression and imperial designs on the region.”
The European Council will decide whether to approve these recommendations at their summit in December.
