WASHINGTON — U.S Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), and Co-Chairman Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) today expressed concern about the increase in violence against protestors in Egypt and called on the political leaders in the country to ensure civil and human rights are protected.
“I remain deeply concerned with the current situation in Egypt and strongly urge all sides to avoid violent confrontation. I call on the Egyptian government to respect the fundamental human rights of its people, including immediate reinstatement of Internet access, and to cease all attempts at censorship. Only peaceful dialogue between all parties will result in a meaningful outcome that meets the needs of the Egyptian people,” said Chairman Cardin.
Co-Chairman Hastings, the Organization for Security and Cooperation’s (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly Special Representative for Mediterranean Affairs, said “As an active Mediterranean Partner for Cooperation in the OSCE, Egypt is well aware of the principles of free peaceful assembly and political pluralism at the core of the Helsinki Process. I ask that the Egyptian government recall these principles and ensure safe, unfettered assembly for those who wish to exercise their right to free expression. Violent suppression will only increase civil unrest.”
