In 2004 Mongolia became an Asian Partner for Cooperation and then in 2012 became the 57th participating State of the OSCE. Mongolia has hosted several OSCE conferences, chaired the OSCE’s Forum for Security Cooperation, and also hosted the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s fall meeting in 2015.
In 2013, Mongolia invited the OSCE to observe the June 26 presidential election. The election was characterized by a competitive campaign conducted in an environment that respected fundamental freedoms. The OSCE did note that restrictive legal provisions prevented media from providing sufficient information to the voters and that the electoral legal framework contains gaps and inconsistencies and does not ensure effective legal remedies for complainants.
