Monaco has been an OSCE participating State since June 25, 1973. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy situated next to France whose economy primarily comprises services and banking, tourism, and some manufacturing.
A member of the Council of Europe, with a population of close to forty thousand, Monaco is one of the smallest independent nations in the world. Its population of just over 30,500 is 47 percent French, 16 percent Monegasque, and 16 percent Italian. Eighty-six percent of its population is Christian, 11.7 percent is unaffiliated, 1.7 percent of the population is Jewish, and 0.4 percent is Muslim.
Monaco has been the site of several OSCE and OSCE PA meetings over the years, including meetings focused on OSCE Mediterranean Partners. Monaco’s elections have also been periodically observed by the OSCE, and OSCE/ODIHR has questioned Monaco on non-discrimination commitments related to reporting hate crimes data.
