Hungary

The Helsinki Commission has a long history of engagement in Central Europe, recognizing the importance of the individual countries of the region even at a time when many policy makers focused only on Moscow as the center of the Warsaw Pact alliance.  Hungary hosted negotiations leading up to the 1994 OSCE Summit of Heads of State and Government. Commissioners have continued to follow issues related to the rule of law, democracy, and protection of the rights of the Romani minority.

Upholding OSCE Commitments in Hungary and Poland

Nov 03, 2021

Political leaders in Hungary and Poland—U.S. allies and members of the European Union—have for the past decade pursued policies that undermine democracy and the rule of law. In Hungary, the Fidesz government has weakened the country’s democratic institutions, especially the free media and independent judiciary.
