Türkiye is a rising power that has been instrumental in the many geopolitical, security and economic developments in the world. From its role as a mediator in the Russian war against Ukraine, to improving ties with its long-time rival Greece, to expanding its security guarantor role in the region and being a much-delayed vote on the NATO expansion, Türkiye has been an increasingly assertive and critical actor in the Mediterranean, Middle East and indeed, globally.

Domestically, Türkiye has suffered from record inflation, high youth unemployment, challenges associated with hosting the world’s largest refugee population and continued attacks on the media and civil society. It is against this backdrop that the opposition parties made significant strides in the recent local elections, now not only controlling the three largest cities but also some areas previously thought as the ruling AKP’s strongholds.

The briefing will take place ahead of the reported visit of President Erdoğan to Washington and offer analysis of these and other recent developments in Türkiye, look at potential ways to strengthen the bilateral relations and offer policy proposals on upholding Türkiye’s international and domestic rule of law commitments.

All briefings are open to the public.
