Marcus Micheli, a career member of the Department of State’s Senior Foreign Service, is the Department’s Senior Advisor to the U.S. Helsinki Commission. Prior to assuming this position, he served as Director of the Department of State’s Office of Russia Affairs in Washington, DC, and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania. He previously also served as Consul General at the U.S. Consulate in Yekaterinburg, Russia; as Director for Central and Eastern European Affairs at the National Security Council; and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, Moldova.
In addition to earlier tours in Washington, DC, as a Pearson Congressional Fellow with the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, as Deputy Director of the Department of State’s Office for Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, and as an advisor to the Office of the Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia, he also has served at U.S. embassies in Montenegro, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, and as a Political Advisor to the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Hercegovina.
Mr. Micheli has a M.A. in International Affairs from Columbia University, a M.A. in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a B.A. in History from Reed College.
