Briefing: Natural Resources, a National Responsibility

WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) and Co-Chairman Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) will hold a briefing:

“Natural Resources, a National Responsibility”
Thursday, April 15
2325 Rayburn House Office Building

A new international convention is in the works aimed at helping resource-rich developing countries make the best economic and social use of their natural resources. The Natural Resource Charter aims to provide a blue-print for successful resource management. This briefing will be a forum to discuss the Charter principles, how it is being accepted around the world and how it complements other resource initiatives, such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), and programs by international lending institutions.

Panelists include:

Dr. Saleem Ali, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies, University of Vermont; author, Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future

Mr. Joseph Bell, Partner, Hogan and Hartson; an original drafter of the Natural Resource Charter

Ms. Karin Lissakers, Director, Revenue Watch Institute
