Commissioners, Experts Call for Strengthening the OSCE

WASHINGTON— The 56-country Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) should be strengthened to continue to serve as a vital tool to improve international security, according to a video released today online by the U.S. Helsinki Commission.

Watch the video here. (Run time 3:16)

Released on the heels of a Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) hearing on inter-ethnic conflicts, this video focuses further attention on security concerns as the U.S. Senate considers ratifying the New START treaty and following the OSCE’s successful diffusion of violence in Kyrgyzstan.

The 3-minute video features interviews with:

• U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), Chairman
• U.S. Representative Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Co-Chairman
• U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Commissioner
• Sally McNamara, Senior Policy Analyst in European Affairs, Heritage Foundation
• Sarah E. Mendelson, Director, Human Rights and Security Initiative,
Center for Strategic and International Studies
• Dr. Stephen J. Blank, Research Professor of National Security Affairs,
U.S. Army War College
