For Immediate Release
March 17, 2010

WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) and Co-Chairman Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) will hold a briefing:

Ethnic and Racial Profiling in the OSCE region

Monday, March 22

2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

NEW ROOM: U.S. Capitol Visitors Center, North Congressional Meeting Room

Minorities and members of immigrant communities routinely report instances of racial and ethnic profiling by the police throughout the OSCE region, despite findings that it does not prevent terrorism or lower crime rates. Join us for a discussion on an international response to the pervasive, yet ineffective practice of ethnic and racial profiling with:

Rosalind Williams, an African American artist and curator who became a naturalized citizen of Spain in 1968. After experiencing racial profiling by Spanish police in 1992, Williams took her case to court, culminating in a landmark decision by the UN Human Rights Committee in 2009.

Rachel Neild, Open Society Justice Initiative, Senior Advisor on ethnic profiling and police reform with the Equality and Citizenship Program

Jamil Dakwar, Director, American Civil Liberties Union’s Human Rights Program and editor of the ACLU and Rights Working Group report: “The Persistence of Racial and Ethnic Profiling in the United States”
